Summertime and the livin’ is….busy!

Summer is here! The kids and I are out of school. Our first round of summer guests has just left for the airport. Gardens are growing like crazy…weeds too. The new David Austin Roses are beginning to bloom, we have peppers nearly ready to pick, beans and tomatoes blooming and the herb garden is needing daily harvesting and flowers are beginning to bloom.

It’s been quite busy and there are still many unfinished projects and some unstarted ones as well. I look forward to a day or two of puttering in the garden and around the house. Realistically, though, between the dancer’s busy summer schedule…classes an hour away 2 evenings a week and at least one more week of daily trips for dance camp and cheerleading practices,  the hunter’s multiple summer jobs and needing to get him to the MVA to test for his Driver’s license and the weaver’s schedule of demos and arts and craft fairs…. puttering time will likely continue to be limited.

The patio/sitting area is layed out awaiting further work, new hammock is up and in use, fire pit has been purchased and we’ve had two lovely evenings sitting around it making s’mores and sandwiches and telling stories and singing songs. I’m putting some photos below for you to see the progress we’re making.

Green Grove is Growing

I wrote this post on mid-May and was waiting to add photos….which are now below. New update on what’s happened in the past month will follow shortly.

It has been a busy time. The gardens are taking shape. The herb bed is nearly complete and has some things growing in it: lemon Balm, Peppermint, Oregano, Thyme, Chives, Garlic Chives, calendula, nasturtiums, and lots of volunteer violets and a few lovely dandelions.

The terraced kitchen beds are full of lettuce, radishes, garlic, bordered by sweet peas to climb the deck railing and hollyhocks to grace the landing on the stairs between upper and lower decks.

Asparagus and rhubarb raised beds are all set to plant, and the two 8×16 ft veggie beds are built and almost ready to plant….takes a lot of soil and compost to fill them up.  The fruit trees, roses,  lilac, elderberry, blueberry, blackberry, and raspberry are all  growing like crazy.

The rhododendrons are blooming, bleeding hearts are at peak, Lilly of the valley is blooming, catmint, salvia, budlia, and iris all are growing and leafing out, the trees have donned their green summer gowns, the woods are so alive with ferns and mossey paths, bluettes, spring beauties, violets…purple, white, and yellow…., haw blossoms, wild geraniums, jack in the pulpit, Solomon’s Seal, plantain, ground ivy, and more.

We’ve seen so many birds: chickadees, wrens, finches, woodpeckers, doves, blue jays, cardinals, blue birds, indigo bunting, tit-mouse, robins, hummingbirds, and more. We’ve seen rabbits, deer, raccoons, a mink, squirrel, mice, chipmunks, and smelled skunk and heard bobcat at night. My husband saw  bear cubs crossing the road below the house a few days ago.

Here are a few photos of the progress.Growing-May 2014 image image image image image image image
